Local business AI visibility

AI visibility for local businesses

For a local business, AI visibility depends on whether an AI system can understand who you are, what you do, where you work and why it should name you instead of another business.

Why local questions are different

A local recommendation combines more than a service name

A question such as “best plumber in Aylesbury” or “locksmith in Canterbury” combines a service, a place, a business identity and enough evidence to make the recommendation useful. AI systems may read websites, profiles, directories and other crawlable sources; the exact answer and sources can vary between systems and runs.

Read the broader AI visibility guide, how Google’s AI Overviews are recorded, or see the measurement method.

Being on Google is not the same as being named by AI

A strong Google result can help people find a page, but it does not guarantee that ChatGPT or Gemini will name the business in an answer. Being indexed is not the same as appearing in a recommendation.

Likewise, being listed on a directory makes a business available to read; it does not automatically make that business a recommendation. Findable measures what is named and which sources are cited, so local improvements are based on evidence rather than a generic checklist.

A practical framework

What information does AI need before it can recommend a local business?

Before an AI system can recommend a local business it needs to be able to read five things about it, consistently, across the sources it trusts. These are information and evidence areas AI systems may use to understand a business. They are not a fixed promise of ranking factors.

01 Business identity
A clear, consistent name and business context so an engine can distinguish you from similarly named companies.
02 Services
Specific descriptions and useful service pages rather than a vague statement that you do everything.
03 Service areas
Accurate geographic coverage that explains where you work, without unsupported town-name stuffing.
04 Evidence
Relevant profiles, directories and third-party references that support the business information available elsewhere.
05 Website structure
Crawlable pages, sensible internal links and technical clarity around the information customers need.

Why local businesses can be missed

These are examples a measurement may uncover, not assumptions about every local business.

  • AI cannot clearly connect a service with the places the business serves.
  • Important services or locations have no useful, crawlable page.
  • The website and external business information disagree or leave important facts unclear.
  • Useful evidence exists only on a third-party source and is not reinforced elsewhere.
  • A competitor provides clearer evidence for the same customer question.
  • Technical issues make an important page or its content difficult to read.

What should a local business website include to be recommended by AI?

Pages that say specifically what you do and where, in the words customers use; a name, a service list and a service area that agree wherever they appear; and a site an engine can crawl and read. The four questions below are the ones local businesses ask most, answered from what the evidence supports.

Reviews

Do customer reviews affect whether ChatGPT or Gemini recommends a local business?

They can be part of the evidence an engine reads, and answers often mention reputation. But Findable does not treat reviews as a direct ranking factor or a guaranteed route to a recommendation: our own measurements found businesses with strong reviews absent from answers and businesses named without them. Reviews sit alongside a clear website and consistent business information, not instead of them.

Directories and citations

Do business directories and citations help businesses appear in AI answers?

Directories are among the sources AI systems cite, and which ones matter is trade-specific: one directory appeared in 394 of our 411 plumber audits and in one of 80 accountant audits. Being listed makes a business available to read; it is not the same as being named. The useful work is being present, accurately, on the sources actually cited for your trade, and then measuring whether the answer changed.

Service pages

Do service pages help local businesses get recommended by AI?

A page that says specifically that you do a particular job, in the words a customer would use, gives an engine something to read and quote. That is the mechanism Findable’s work relies on. It applies only to services the business genuinely offers and customers genuinely ask about; thin pages that restate a homepage add nothing an engine can use.

Location pages

Do location pages help businesses appear in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI?

A local answer connects a service to a place, so a page that states you serve a town, with something specific to say about the work there, can give an engine that connection. A page that only swaps the town name does not, and no location page guarantees a recommendation. Findable builds them for the questions a business can realistically win, chosen from the measurement, and checks the result.

Two things the research did not support as levers: schema markup made no measurable difference to being named (35% of named businesses had it against 32% of everyone else), and a polished site did not predict being named. Read the research.

The questions we measure

Customer-style local searches

Examples include:

Actual questions are tailored to the business, services and location context being measured. They are not one identical list copied across every trade and town.

  • best plumber in [town]
  • emergency locksmith near [town]
  • electrician for EV charger installation in [town]
  • boiler engineer in [town]
  • local accountant for small businesses

What Findable does

Four steps, the same questions both times

How can a local business improve its visibility across AI search engines? Measure first, work on the evidence, then measure again with the same questions: on ChatGPT and Gemini, with Google AI Overview recorded where Google shows one.

  1. Step 1

    Check

Measure where your business is and is not being named.

  2. Step 2

    Identify gaps

Find technical, content, service and location opportunities.

  3. Step 3

    Improve evidence

Improve relevant pages and the evidence AI systems can read.

  4. Step 4

    Remeasure

Ask the same approved questions again after four weeks.

The comparison uses the same approved question set and engines. See the full methodology for definitions and limitations.

Local AI visibility versus generic SEO

Traditional SEO can help search engines understand and rank pages. Local AI visibility adds a different question: does an AI system have enough clear, consistent evidence to confidently name this business in an answer for this service and place? The two disciplines can support each other, but neither is a promise of a permanent recommendation.

Questions local businesses ask

Local AI visibility, answered plainly

How do AI systems choose local businesses?

AI systems use the information and sources available to them when answering a customer-style question. That can include a business website, profiles, directories and other crawlable references. Findable measures what is actually named and cited rather than claiming a fixed list of ranking factors.

Does ranking well on Google mean I will appear in ChatGPT?

No. Search visibility and AI visibility overlap, but a Google position does not guarantee that ChatGPT or Gemini will name the business in an answer. The systems may use different evidence and return different results.

Do I need pages for every town I serve?

No. A location page should exist only when it provides genuinely useful, specific information for that place. We do not recommend thin pages that swap a town name while adding no helpful evidence.

Do directories matter for AI visibility?

Directories and profiles can be sources an AI system reads, but being listed is not the same as being recommended. We look at which sources appear in measured answers and work on the evidence that is relevant to your business.

Do reviews matter?

Reviews can be part of a business's wider evidence, but Findable does not treat one generic review tactic as a guaranteed route to an AI recommendation. The useful question is what the measured answers cite and what your customers need to understand.

Do I need a new website?

Not necessarily. We start by checking what your current site and other sources clearly communicate. The right improvement may be clearer existing pages, useful service or location content, consistent business information or technical fixes.

How do you measure improvement?

We record how often your business is named for an approved set of customer-style questions, then ask the same questions on the same engines after four weeks. That makes the before-and-after comparison meaningful.

Can you guarantee I will be recommended?

No one can guarantee a permanent AI recommendation. Findable measures your starting visibility, improves the evidence AI systems can read and applies the guarantee to whether measured visibility has improved under the stated terms.
